yesterday, we got a chance to go around the city and talk to people who had all sorts of stories about aretha franklin. every person in the barber shop had some interaction in terms of a time they remember aretha franklin. one older gentleman told me never forgets the first time he heard respect. he said the idea a black woman could stand strong and sing that song really meant a lot to him. he talked about he would never miss a chance to see aretha perform when she came home to detroit. they considered her a hometown queen of soul. they wanted to see her. you think about this church here and what it stands for. this street is named for her father. he did so much in terms of the civil rights movement. i heard you talk about the connection she had with dr. martin luther king. detroit was a center of hope for so many people. think about last few days here, it was really hot. all of a sudden this morning, it started raining. then we got the news here.
