Mr. Plow
Over in Scotland, where they call their winter trucks ‘winter gritters’ (which I just love), they’ve just announced the name of their latest addition, Charles RennIce MackinSlush, after a Glaswegian artist and architect. Others will follow, selected from 1,200 entries submitted by the public. MackinSlush will join his plowmates, Yes Sir, Ice Can Boogie; Buzz IceClear; and IRN-BRU®’s Grits You Thru.
These are all definitely a step up from the famous Boaty McBoatface, the title affixed to a scientific research vessel used by Sir David Attenborough after the people in the charge of that effort in Great Britain opened up name submissions to the public. I’d just like to hear Attenborough say that name, personally.
gritters Charles RennIce MackinSlush THERE are many modern tributes to Charles Rennie Mackintosh – but this is maybe one of the most unique. An appeal to name the 50-strong fleet of gritters covering 400 miles of Scotland’s trunk roads received more than 1200 online entries. And the first of the successful nominations are revealed today. Charles RennIce MackinSlush is the first of the new gritter names to be announced – and who knows what its namesake would make of the choice. Gritters plough their routes from Glasgow to Dumfries and through to Ayr and Stranraer, and giving the machinery comedic names has become a new winter tradition.

Nine tweets that perfectly sum up Scotlandâs humour in 2020 The coronavirus pandemic disrupted lives, cancelled events and brought parts of the country to a standstill. But as more and more of us spent time indoors as a result of lockdowns, it’s safe to say one aspect of Scottish life remained the same. If there’s one thing that could survive a pandemic, it would be our humour – bold as brass and utterly unapologetic.
Here, we’ve summed up nine tweets from the last year that perfectly sum up Scotland’s patter for 2020.
