Abbeville man dies after fire, explosion at New Iberia workshop

Abbeville man dies after fire, explosion at New Iberia workshop The Louisiana State Fire Marshal s Office is investigating after a man was killed in a fire at a New Iberia workshop.  The New Iberia Fire Department was called at about 1 p.m. Sunday to a fire and explosion at the workshop in the 5500 block of Claude Viator Road.  Firefighters found two men who had moderate injuries and a third man who had serious injuries, said fire marshal spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue. All three were taken to a local hospital.  The 63-year-old Abbeville man who had serious injuries died Monday at the hospital. He has not yet been identified.

Shortly after 8 a.m. on February 20, the New Iberia Fire Department responded to a call for a camper trailer fire located in the 1700 block of Juanita Street. A relative discovered the victim and remnants of a fire when bringing the occupant breakfast. While official identification and cause of death are pending an autopsy, the victim is believed to be the 81- year-old camper owner who had traveled from his property in Sunset to the relative’s property in New Iberia due to the winter weather threat across the state.

Leonce Romero Jr., 81, died in the fire that happened Saturday in Iberia Parish. Shortly after 8 a.m. on February 20, the New Iberia Fire Department responded to a call for a camper trailer fire located in the 1700 block of Juanita Street. A relative discovered the victim and remnants of a fire when bringing the occupant breakfast. The victim owned the camper, and had traveled from his property in Sunset to the relative’s property in New Iberia due to the winter weather threat across the state.

Investigation continues in fatal Iberia Parish fire SFM and last updated 2020-12-22 17:39:14-05 IBERIA PARISH, La. - State Fire Marshal (SFM) deputies continue investigating a house fire in Iberia Parish that claimed the life of a child. Around 5:30 a.m. on December 21, the New Iberia Fire Department responded to a call for a house fire located in the 300 block of Deare Street. While six occupants were able to escape unharmed, firefighters later located the body of a 4-year-old girl inside, according to a spokesperson for SFM. Official identification and cause of death is pending an autopsy. Following an assessment of the scene, deputies determined the fire originated in one of the home s bedrooms. While the official cause of this fire remains undetermined at this time, deputies cannot rule out potential electrical malfunction and/or the possibility of unsafe heating practices involving candles, the spokesperson stated.
