Spies pointed a loaded handgun at a cashier Sept. 30 at the Point Liquor and Tobacco Store, 3221 Center Point Rd. NE, while demanding she give him money from the register, according to a criminal complaint.
Spies admitted to investigators he planned the robbery with an accomplice, Dekheary V. Steele, 28, of Chicago, Ill., and was armed with a loaded Springfield XD 9 mm handgun, according to court records.
Spies fled from the store in a vehicle Steele was driving, the complaint states.
A judge previously moved the Spies’ case from juvenile court to district court because it was a violent crime involving a weapon.
CEDAR RAPIDS One of the teens charged with killing 20-year-old Malik Sheets in June plans to ask a judge to transfer his charges to juvenile court.
Sarah Hradek, the lawyer for Marshawn L. Jeffries, 17, of Cedar Rapids, told a judge Friday she will file that motion in the near future.
Jeffries was 16 years old when Sheets was fatally shot during a party June 18. He turned 17 in October.
During the Friday hearing, First Assistant Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks said he plans to file a motion to consolidate the trials for Jeffries and his co-defendants Christian Emedi, 17, of Cedar Rapids; Jeffries’ brother, Miguel Ruiz, 24; and Emedi’s girlfriend, Aleah Anderman, 17 because they are all charged in the same crime.
