I have ulcerative colitis, my grandfather had Sjogren’s syndrome, and my mom had stage-four sarcoidosis; she received a double-lung transplant in 2017. When I heard that hospitals were postponing surgeries because of Covid, I realized that if my mom had been at the wrong place at the wrong time, she might not have received the transplant that saved her life. My grandfather, meanwhile, died from heart failure in May 2020 after being in and out of hospitals for a year. Because of the pandemic, none of us could see him before he died.
