Exhibition to mark 50 years since Horncastle railway closed

Despite opposition, daily passenger services ceased on September 13, 1954. A special service, organised by railway enthusiasts, ran 10 years later, bringing the largest steam locomotive ever seen in Horncastle to the branch. From then, only goods trains ran, with the crew opening and closing level crossing gates and changing the points on the seven-and-a-half mile run from Woodhall Junction.

Best preserved Roman oven among finds discovered during the Spalding Western Relief work  | Updated: 13:35, 26 January 2021 A Roman oven was among the thousands of artefacts discovered along the route of the Spalding Western Relief Road. Archaeologists had uncovered a range of objects during a dig along the route, which starts at Pinchbeck Road, with the oldest activity dating back to the Iron Age. Lincolnshire County Council s Historic Environment Officer Ian Marshman said one of the most interesting finds has been an unusual type of Roman oven, known as a tannur.
