COUNCILLORS across South Lakeland have voted to call a halt to any increases to their allowances. The amount of hours worked by representatives of South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) has increased significantly during the pandemic, according to some, with others worrying that such long hours on little money, will dissuade new talent from joining local government. Cllr Tom Harvey, who represents Burton and Crooklands, said he thinks the money needs to be more attractive, to attract the best. He said: We know how the workload has changed this year, but the existing allowances, doesn’t allow a significant number of our residents to want to take up a position here as a councillor.
