to remember hazel, not just what the president of the united states wants, and get this program renewed in full. sure. and i m sure senator, you are compassionate as a father of many, in hearing this mom s story, i know this is also about the deficit. and pennies, nickels and dimes and leaves americans thinking why, to the democrats and republicans, why drag this out to the health care of hazel and millions of kids at stake? well, with all due respect, i haven t heard a single republican talking about not reauthorizing chip or not funding chip. this is not ha controversia con issue. no one is saying we shouldn t fund the program. in fact, point to one republican who has said we should get rid of this program or defund it or cut it. i think the issue is what happens after march. and it s expired. and senator, it expired too. excuse me. i gave you a chance to talk. you need to give me a chance.
and the question that i haven t heard a single democrat answer i think at least to my liking in a convincing way is what s happened to the party, why have they lost over 1,000 legislative seats over the past eight years? why have they lost over 60 seats in the house, and why are they in the worst shape than they ve been in since 1929? it really is like the 1920s. lowest number of governors, lowest number of house members and about 1,000 state legislative seats they ve lost over the last decade. part of the reason is they re defending their gains. they built a big welfare state and now they re protecting it from erosion which is what s happening probably this week or next week in the senate with health care. the story gets at the different splits inside the party as with the republicans in 2010, we re now seeing democrats split done left and center on health care, on taxes, on tech, on trade, and
basically are putting a mom tax on them and saying, like the old days, if you want maternity coverage, you ll have to buy a completely separate policy just that covers maternity care and that s going to increase costs unfairly and disproportionately. makes insurance companies price it only to people who need it and that will be a deterrent for them because they re in the business of not paying out. it s not just maternity care. taking away that essential health benefits package does is it leaves people with the idea that they have insurance coverage, but when they go to use it, the only thing it covers is the bearest of bear minimums, leaving them so underinsured that they can t afford to use their insurance because deductibles and co-pays are astronomically high. price says governors are coming to us and asking for this. in our reporting, i haven t heard a single governor say what i want is less money towards medicaid from the federal
