PennDOT proposes tolls for I-83 South Bridge

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is considering tolls for the I-83 South Bridge. The tolls would help cover the cost of replacing the 61-year-old bridge, which carries more than 125,000 vehicles over the Susquehanna River every day. The replacement project has an estimated price tag of $500 million to $650 million, PennDOT said.Eight other bridges in need of upgrades are also being considered for tolling to help generate the money needed for improvement projects.PennDOT hasn’t yet decided on the toll amounts.“The toll rates are a range between one and two dollars, typically, for most of these. It could be a couple cents higher or lower, and as we continue to evaluate these candidates, that range is going to shrink and become a little bit more accurate,” said Ken McClain, of PennDOT.If approved, the tolls would be implemented in late 2023, at the earliest.Lawmakers oppose planSome state lawmakers have already voiced opposition to the tolling proposal.Sen.
