Franklin protests begin
âAbout 1000 anti-dam protesters have moved into the rugged Franklin River to prepare for todayâs blockade of Hydro-Electricity Commission works. Police from nearby Queenstown and Strahan have travelled to the site by launch to prepare for the confrontation. Locals are unimpressed. They are generally in favour of the dam because it will create jobs, although one cruise boat operator has donated the use of one of his launches to the protesters.â
