Scientists in Amsterdam say they have solved one of the most vexing puzzles of Covid-19: why some patients deteriorate rapidly just as the virus seems to be on the wane.
The team at the UMC teaching hospital found that while the majority of hospital patients recover, a few produce excessive numbers of antibodies, causing potentially fatal inflammation of the lungs.
The researchers also discovered that the inflammation could be treated with fostamatinib, a drug that was approved last year by the European Medicines Agency for auto-immune conditions, the Volkskrant reported.
The executive board of Wageningen University & Research (WUR) has appointed Prof. Dr. Mangala Srinivas as Professor and Chair Group Leader of Cell Biology and Immunology. She succeeds Professor Huub Savelkoul, who is now Personal Professor. The a

Despite starting last in the EU with its coronavirus vaccination programme, some 7% of the Dutch have now had their first jab, propelling the Netherlands up the vaccination league tables, according to European figures.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control says of the EU member states, only Malta (10%), Denmark (8.8%) and Finland (7.7%) have vaccinated a bigger proportion of their populations.
Bulgaria remains bottom of the list, with a vaccination rate so far of 3%. In total, nearly 43 million doses have been shipped to EU countries and over 30 milion people have been vaccinated, the ECDPC says.

Beter treatment of allergies through collaboration between WUR and Rijstate
Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and Rijnstate Hospital are to collaborate closely in the Rijnstate Allergy Centre. This collaboration aims to innovate and further improve the diagnostics and treatment of patients suffering from allergies.
WUR immunologists and allergists of Rijnstate Hospital have been collaborating for some time now. Janneke Ruinemans-Koerts works as a clinical chemist at Rijnstate Hospital and has recently been appointed to a part-time position at WUR. She will focus on the implementation of new diagnostic methods. ‘With this collaboration, we hope to bridge the gap between scientific insights and clinical practice’, says Ruinemans-Koerts. ‘Thus, we hope to make new developments accessible and available to patients sooner’.
