Family lost as Aberdeen council housing strike action escalates

Union members picketing outside Marischal College in Broad Street, Aberdeen, last month. A furious row between council housing staff left at “breaking point” and Aberdeen City Council will escalate today – as around 40 workers go on strike for four days. Unite Scotland leaders describe the walk-out, which begins at 8.30am, as a “major escalation” in a dispute which has already caused employees to down tools for days at a time. The dispute comes as the council’s housing team faces mounting challenges due to rising rent arrears and homelessness in the Granite City. Outstanding council rent totalled £7.9 million last year, compared to £2.64m in 2015-16.

Earlier this year Historic Environment Scotland (HES) – the government’s heritage agency – earmarked the eight brutalist blocks for A-listed status. However, the move proved controversial and was widely denounced by council leaders, MPs and MSPs – including government minister and Aberdeen Central MSP Kevin Stewart.

‘Flats fail to meet listing criteria’ Through its lawyers Montagu Evans LLP, the local authority said: “It is the Appellant’s submission that the multi-storey flats fail to meet the listing criteria, both individually and as a group. In addition, there are other material grounds which are wholly relevant in the determination of this appeal and ought to be considered by Scottish Ministers.” HES plans to use them to tell the story of how Scotland emerged from the Second World War. However, in its appeals Aberdeen City Council has argued that the buildings do not meet the listing criteria, and the extent of the listed status.
