hurricane jose is about to take a swipe at the east coast. wnbc s weatherman dave price is here. is maria expected to follow the same path as irma? a very similar path, that we can say, peter. let s walk over here for a quick second and i ll show you. it s the leeward islands that were just pounded by irma. as we take a look now, our biggest concern is going to be not only those islands but additionally puerto rico, which may see a direct hit from this storm. let s walk over and show you just a little bit of what you saw as we came in from commercial break. dominica and into guadalupe, those islands are just outside of what we see right here. although it may not be clear to you, that s the beginnings of an eye beginning to take hold there. that s the concern as we head through the next several hours. let s walk back to the main map and take a look at things.
nursing home lost power. all eyes are once again on the atlantic ocean where tropical storm maria is now hurricane maria. one of three storms that meteorologists are watching in that part of the world. also along ports of the east coast, tropical storm watches going up as hurricane jose passes by. and you see lee not far in the east. hurricane maria is maintaining the focus. that is what has hurricane watchers mostly concerned because it s been following the path of hurricane irma. meteorologist julie martin joins us live from the cnn weather center in atlanta. julie, is it still following the path of irma? yes and it is expected to strengthen as well. right now a category 1 storm, maria, lee nothing to worry about at the moment. appears to be falling part. jose a category 1 as well that could impact the northeast coast. let s take a look at maria because maria is one that we will have to continue to watch. we are looking at the potential for this to be moving on into
it approaches, the u.s. virgin islands expected to tlengt ed e into a category three storm. 125 miles per hour. the models have been shifting with the latest run back off to the east. the european model in blue is squarely over bermuda monday afternoon. they posted it a little closer to the u.s. coast and the jury is out on any impacts here to the u.s. then we have the hurricane jose sits out here and moving off to the north around 9. winds at 90. it s a healthy category one hurricane expected to move to the north and not expected at this point to make a direct hit on the u.s., but bringing rough weather including rip currents to the eastern u.s. thanks so much. as we track those threats, many

that will bring strong riptides and rip currents into early next week and also the potential for tropical storm force gusts for the cape cod region. now, we re just passing peak season for at least the atlantic hurricane season. and it s no wonder we have three storms right now . this is hurricane jose, 130 kilometer per hour sustained winds. there is a lot of shear. coldest and tallest thunderstorms is helping spread the storm out and also suppress its strengthening process. so we don t believe that it will make any direct landfall across the united states, but again, nonetheless we do have the potential for strong gusty winds at least for the southeastern coast line of new england and large waves as well. interesting to on note, george, there have only been six years that have seen 13 named storms as of september 16.
