Allan Jerome Hughes, Jr
ALPENA A man arrested in Arizona in conjunction with a recent home invasion, assault, and manhunt in Alpena had “high violence potential,” according to police reports.
The May 4 arrest of Allan Hughes, 28, in Phoenix stemmed from an Alpena Police Department investigation of a break-in at an Alpena home and ensuing police search for two armed men on April 27.
Although two discarded guns possibly involved in the assault were found after the escape, the Scottsdale, Arizona police asked to assist in Hughes’ arrest were told by Michigan State Police that Hughes was believed to be still armed and “very dangerous,” according to police reports obtained by The News from the Scottsdale Police Department.

ALPENA Last year, Northeast Michigan police seized ten times as much methamphetamine as in the year before, despite a dip in drug-related arrests, according to a report recently produced by the Huron Undercover Narcotics Team detailing its 2020 activity.
The data confirms what police and courts have reported seeing in recent years: Meth is a growing problem in Northeast Michigan, according to D/Lt. Stuart Sharp, HUNT commander.
Police made half as many drug-related arrests in 2020 when police work was limited by coronavirus pandemic protocols as in the previous year, down to 52 arrests from 98 in 2019, according to the HUNT report.

Judge Ed Black presides over Alpena s 26th Circuit Court on Monday.
ALPENA An Alpena County man who turned his life around once should have a chance to do it again, Judge Ed Black said in Alpena’s 26th Circuit Court on Monday.
Though he planned to sentence Jason Obuchowski, of Ossineke, to two years in prison for multiple drug possession charges, Black told the court he was moved to keep the defendant in county jail after an impassioned plea by defense attorney Mike Lamble.
Convicted of crimes in the past, Obuchowski moved past assaultive behavior and addiction before falling into methamphetamine use and getting caught in possession of the drug in fall of 2020, Black said as he contemplated what sentence to impose.
