NRG s Huntley Generating Station in the Town of Tonawanda has been closed since 2016, and the property s future remains unclear.
But National Grid has removed an obstacle to redevelopment of the high-profile industrial site. At the same time, the utility has invested in its own power distribution equipment next door, benefiting some of the region s largest industrial customers.
National Grid recently finished pouring nearly $50 million into its switchyard adjacent to the Huntley plant that looms over the Niagara River. The utility separated its switchyard s operations from the plant, and installed new equipment for feeding electricity to employers including General Motors, Aurubis Buffalo and Sumitomo Rubber USA.
