A new statistical port district that could become the largest inland port in the United States by freight tonnage has received preliminary approval but awaits a final review.
The Mid-Ohio Valley Port District is planned to encompass nearly 220 miles of the Ohio River between Mile 40.0 and Mile 256.8, filling in a gap between the Huntington Tri-State Port District and the Pittsburgh Port District. It encompasses parts of seven counties in Ohio and nine counties in West Virginia.
The port district has been preliminarily approved by the Institute for Water Resources. The institute is the Corps of Engineers’ center of expertise for hydraulic and hydrologic modeling, dam and levee safety, integrated water resources management, collaborative planning and environmental conflict resolution and the collection, management and dissemination of Civil Works and navigation information, including t
DUNLOW, W.Va. â As Tasha Chafins browsed through shoes that would match her red dress, she talked about how prom is a chance for students to make lasting memories.
âItâs just something you remember for a long time,â she said. âYou can only have it so many times, so itâs best to enjoy it now and make the memories. Iâm excited for pictures.â
Wayne County students had a chance to get free prom dresses April 9, when the Dunlow Community Center received dresses donated from Macyâs and community members.
Those who attended could pick out a dress and shoes, along with some accessories, but students wonât be seeing the traditional prom they may have heard about in the past.

HUNTINGTON â Soon, visitors at Yeager and Huntington Tri-State airports will not have to worry about lugging an extra book or keeping their tablet charged, as Little Free Libraries will be there to help.
The libraries will be sponsored by Marshall University. The M-shaped bookshelves are being built by students in Bret Mastersâ building technology class at Cabell County Career Technology Center.
The first bookshelf is set to be installed at Yeager Airport in Charleston this spring, pending the classesâ ability to finish the large project during the pandemic. Kelli Johnson, associate librarian at Marshall, said she hopes by spring break there will be a Little Free Library in Charleston with one ready to go at Tri-State by winter break.

The Port of Huntington Tri-State is the nation’s busiest inland port by freight volume, according to a recently released freight analysis for 2019.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Waterborne Commerce Statistics Center released data late last year showing the port has overtaken the Ports of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky in total volume moved.
Both ports are statistical ports with boundaries that have changed in recent years. The Port of Huntington Tri-State was the first port in the nation to adopt a statistical boundary definition, doing so in 2000. While the previous Port of Huntington encompassed only 14 miles of the Ohio River in the area surrounding the city, the Port of Huntington Tri-State achieved approval from the Corps of Engineers to broaden its footprint. It now includes 100 miles of the Ohio River, nine miles of the Big Sandy River and 90 miles of the Kanawha Riv
