At an elementary school in Scotia, children were counting down the days. The fifth graders aren’t waiting for Christmas but Dec. 20, the day two years in a row earthquakes shook the area.
Earthquakes and aftershocks struck Humboldt County early Monday morning. The largest, originating east of Petrolia, was a magnitude 4.8, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Smith River Complex will see rainfall this weekend, but not before “near critical fire weather conditions” that will play out Wednesday with gusts of north winds blowing over the now 75,000 acre group of fires impacting Del Norte County. Governor Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency for the complex Tuesday, following a similar declaration from county officials on Aug. 18. The complex is at 7% containment.
