Orange County District Atty. Todd Spitzer announced a set of “guiding principles” Wednesday to address systemic racism in the criminal justice system.
“We as a society have engaged in systemic mass incarceration,” Spitzer said. “As a prosecutor, I will stop it. We as a society have prosecuted people of color differently. As a prosecutor, I will stop it.”
Spitzer added, “We cannot fix a systematic problem without a systematic approach. That approach must be thoughtful, thorough, and include different perspectives, different experiences, and different ideas. Justice is not evidenced by the longest sentence; justice is what is best for the individual, the victim, and society as a whole.”

The family of a Southern California man who died in police custody is calling the deputies who arrested him murderers . and they re going to sue over his death.

Police body camera video released Monday by authorities in Southern California shows a violent arrest of a man, who later died, in a grocery store earlier this month.
Ernie Serrano, 33, of Jurupa Valley, Calif., which is east of Los Angeles, died after a Dec. 15 confrontation with Riverside County Sheriff deputies and a security guard at a Stater Bros. grocery store. The deputies were called to investigate reports of battery and assault with a deadly weapon.
Several minutes of store surveillance video show Serrano at a checkout line, possibly to purchase items, and walking around the area. A security guard confronts him and they appear to get into a physical struggle.

Ernie Serrano died last Tuesday after he was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon following an incident that required police assistance at a grocery store in Jurupa Valley . which left him bloodied, battered and, ultimately, unresponsive.
The Riverside County Sheriff s Dept. released body cam footage as well as witness and surveillance video from that day . and it shows Serrano at a Stater Bros. attempting to check out at the register, when for some reason security intervenes . an
They say he tried to grab a security guard s gun, but his family disputes that. This doesn t happen to people in Sherman Oaks or in the Valley to white people in the store. You don t see a cop run up to them and hit them with a baton, Humberto Guizar of the Justice X Legal group said. He was not hitting nobody back, he was not fighting like they said he was, said an emotional Maria Serrano, the mother of Ernie Serrano. He was taking the hits and they put him on the floor, and they killed him. He died right there. He didn t die at the hospital. He died right there.
