NEW PHILADELPHIA Verrelle Wyatt passed through a lot in the year before he became the first man to cross the finish line at the 14th annual Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital Run for Home half marathon on Sunday.
In the past year, he caught COVID-19, had hernia surgery and became the father to a girl who is now 9 months old.
Since life settled down, Wyatt has been able to run two or three times a week. I m just grateful to finally try to get some peace into my life, a little bit better, and get back to running, he said.
The 34-year-old former collegiate runner from Akron last raced about two years ago.

Strengthening Stark recently announced a new partnership with Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio.
The goal of the partnership is to bring economic development strategies and neighborhood revitalization efforts to Southeast Canton and Southwest Massillon.
Habitat Renewal Projects in Southeast Canton and Southwest Massillon will invest an estimated $5.5 million in neighborhoods and provide opportunities for service to approximately 15,000 volunteers during the next several years.

Too many children and families in our community are living in a cycle of poverty, a heartbreaking reality that was underscored in the recent Repository article Child poverty in Stark County, Canton at crisis level. Though the facts and statistics of the article are daunting, we hold tightly to hope for our community.
At Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio, we have seen the burden families carry when the ends never seem to meet. We have seen poverty steal childhood from children who do not deserve to grow up so quickly. We have also seen that a good home, an affordable home, helps our neighbors break the generational grip of poverty.
