This hearing is about a culture of cover up. Its a culture of cover up that the coast guard has spawned and sustained for decades. It has discouraged and deterred victims and survivors of sexual abuse from coming forward. It has denied them justice and it has failed to protect them from retaliation and reprisal when they have stood up and spoken out. It has denied them justice and it has failed to protect them from ret for years, this culture enabled Sexual Misconduct to occur despite evidence of widespread, unaddressed and egregious violations of basic norms. We want to make sure that there is not only transparency but also accountability going forward. This culture has continued to refuse accountability. Which is to say colleges, this year in particular, are starting to see buyer resistance. People are thinking very hard about whether they really want to spend 50,000, 60,000 a year and up. Everytime people fine out what the tuition is, its like, i cant believe how expensive it is. Theyre not seeing that as a good buy. Especially if its financed by debt. Right now a lot of colleges are dealing with this price discrimination thats what Financial Aid is, they figure out how much you can pay and thats the price for you because i like you. Thats what is going on. Youre seeing some schools actually having a Credit Rating downgraded bid moodies because they look at their Business Model and doesnt see it sustainable. Enrollments are dropping, and within colleges youre seeing Humanities Departments done New York Times has a piece on this recently. The Humanities Department losing their majors majors and enrolles because people dont want to major in the humanities because theyre concerned about
Extraction. Its also, fracking can be spelled with a c, its also the term is high volume hydraulic fracturing or hvhf which is really what were going to be talking to this afternoon. Next slide, please. So the thing thats important when were talking about fracking is that theres often a very important disconnect between what industry is saying and what is expected and understood in the popular press and the public. Of so when industry says there arent any accidents attributed to fracking, theyre talking about a very small portion of the shale gas extraction process. When the public and most journalists talk about fracking, theyre talking about the entire shale gas extraction process. So theres, its important to understand this distinction. Sometimes people are saying things that are technically true but are misleading in the context because of the disconnect between the language. Next slide.
