sheriff arpaio s policies demonstrate exactly why local law enforcement agencies should not get into the business of immigration enforcement. the sheriff and others are enforcing the human smuggling law. they are doing so fairly, impartially and constitutionally. the aclu wants the judge to sanction arpaio. that could come tomorrow or next week, jon? jon: are these legal troubles, are they going to hurt the sheriff in any way? well, you know, he has always been a very polarizing figure. you love him or hate him. with voters sitting on the fence. last week s highly critical report from the department of justice could be damaging. it included the sheriff engaged in a pattern or practice of violating the law. yet, here in maine is a poplar politician. many see him as this. rather as political payback from the obama administration who arpaio criticizes on a regular basis. jon he is 79 years old. he is expected to make a decision sometime next week run for sheriff again or maybe
illegally. we re going to send out posse and deputy sheriff s. if we come across any people here pursuant to our duties, we re going to arrest them, turn them over to i.c.e. or book them into our jails. but if there are already programs under which local police can help enforce federal law, why do you need this arizona law? well, this law that the part she struck out so far, when we come across an illegal immigrant, i was hoping that we could arrest that person under that misdemeanor law in lieu of turning them over to i.c.e. right now we ll keep turning them over to i.c.e. we will do our duties, doing our enforcement. if we come across any illegal aliens, we re going to do what we ve been doing three years, enforcing the human smuggling law, state laws. we ve been doing it. 40,000 people, we have arrested, detained or investigated in our jails. i would like to have seen this law go through but we re still going to do what we have been doing. why would you prefer to hold
that misdemeanor law in lieu of turning them over to i.c.e. right now we ll keep turning them over to i.c.e. we will do our duties, doing our enforcement. if we come across any illegal aliens, we re going to do what we ve been doing three years, enforcing the human smuggling law, the employer sanction law. those are both state laws. we ve been doing it. 40,000 people, we have arrested, detained or investigated in our jails. i would like to have seen this law go through but we re still going to do what we have been doing. why would you prefer to hold them in your jails as opposed to just turning them over to federal immigration authorities? because under current law, you can just turn the illegals over to federal immigration authorities and, therefore, not incur the expense of putting them in jails, right, which the new law would require. i don t care about expense. i have tents. very cheap to put them in tents, if they re convicted.
ignoring the situation along the border. we have an employer sanctions law in arizona that s going before the u.s. supreme court in this next term, that s important, we have a human smuggling law, sheriff arpaio and i enforced that in maricopa county. the federal government is not part of the st. louis, they re part of the problem and they have to let arizona deal with it. but it is a federal government issue as well but of course it s right there, it s literally close to home, it s there. sorry, alisha, but andrew, a final question, i need to know specifics, sir, i understand the laws that you want to put in place. i want to know action, right now, is it more troops you need, what is it you need to help you fight this problem down there? we need everything. we need more troops on the ground along the border, we need the justice department to stop trying to torpedo our torpedo our laws and we need the federal government to not be pushing for amnesty but all that does is encourage
jim, he has many fans in this state. he has many critics as well. but his point is, i m going to keep doing what i was doing. if somebody wants to take me to court too, so be it. it s interesting, what he s been doing is supported by law. and this is what you do across the country. when you get somebody in your jail and you think they might be in the country illegally, you contact i.c.e. not in defiance of what the judge did yesterday. of course, joe arpaio as we say in the business is unavoidable for comment, so he s playing to his strengths. what s very interesting about this is he s just going to continue doing what he s been doing, including supporting a law which made it through the appeals process. the interpretation of our human smuggling law. i want you to listen to one of the law enforcement voices, before you weigh in. roberto villasenor is the police chief in tucson. he said his resources are better
