A year ago, our lives ground to a halt as Covid-19 spread across the U.S. Everything but essential businesses shut down, schools closed, and the music world stopped in its tracks. Tour announcements became tour cancellations, festivals were called off, and those of us who attended several live shows per week found ourselves on our couches, grieving not only the fallout of the pandemic but the loss of one of our greatest comforts: music.

The Gardner Scene: A look back 100 years ago to 1921
From a five-legged calf to the Human Fly, the year had many memorial moments

One hundred years ago, they called them “the Roaring Twenties.”
They were days of Prohibition and gangsters, flappers dancing the Charleston, silent movies featuring Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, and song hits from Al Jolson and Eddie Cantor.
The town of Gardner was going through the paces to eventually become the city of Gardner in two more years.
Last week, we took a look back 50 years ago to the year 1971. This week, we will go back a full century as we look at many of the unique tidbits and highlights from the local scene for the year 1921.
this man fly with seemingly a large device that you are seeing there on your screen? could have been a home-built gyro copter or something you buy for tens of thousands of dollars. how did he fly it through the most restricted and heavily protected air space in the world? remember we are just a couple of miles from reagan national airport where there are hundreds of commercial flights that take off and land every day. a couple months ago there was a small drone flown on to the grounds of the white house. some secret service said we ll come up with tests to find ways to prevent that from happening. now they have to figure out something bigger. mike mccall, chair of the homeland security committee has gone on the record saying they would have been prepared to shoot this chopter erchopper down. the 61-year-old mailman apparently landed and then simply got out and surrendered.
