Hong Kong Ex-Lawmaker Rejects HSBC Account Freeze Explanation
Bloomberg 18/01/2021 Denise Wee
(Bloomberg) Former Hong Kong lawmaker Ted Hui stepped up his criticism of HSBC Holdings Plc as Chief Executive Officer Noel Quinn reached out to him personally to explain why the lender froze his accounts after he fled the city for self-exile in the U.K.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, which included a photo of part of the letter he received from Quinn, Hui said that HSBC has “failed to provide the legal basis” for freezing his accounts and those of his family members and didn’t explain why his family was also “collectively punished.”
Ted Hui, who is currently in Britain, maintained the cards’ cancellation was a ‘political consideration’
He also accused the bank of ‘unlawfully embezzling’ from him after he was told he may not be able to receive refunds for certain goods
Hong Kong: Disbursement arrangement explained
The Home Affairs Bureau today said it is necessary to withhold the disbursement of honorarium, allowances and expenses reimbursement to Hui Chi-fung from December 3 onwards after having considered relevant factors.
Mr Hui declared self-exile on social media and left Hong Kong on December 3.
In its statement, the bureau pointed out that the Guidelines on the Remuneration Package for Members of the District Councils of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region promulgated by the Home Affairs Department set out clear guidelines for District Council members.
All members are required to observe the guidelines to ensure the proper use of public funds and they should use the funds in an open, fair and accountable manner.
