May 20, 2021 TORONTO – With licenses for more than 30,000 long-term care beds set to expire in 2025 and 15,000 new beds in the works, a group of eminent public policy experts is calling on Queen’s Park to develop them all as public non-profit beds as a first step in “an orderly and phased reduction of for-profit long-term care in Ontario.” “The primary obligation of a for-profit long-term care operator is its fiduciary duty to maximize shareholder value,” says public interest lawyer Steven Shrybman, one of nine co-authors of a new report,
Recommendations to Transform Long-Term Care in Ontario . “That priority is clearly incompatible with the delivery of necessary health care services, where the first and overarching priority must be to ensure the health and well-being of residents.”
The province should make capital funding available to not-for-profit LTC operators so they can open LTC homes, says a report written by nine policy experts.

Although they knew it was coming, Henderson County Commissioners Court members still knew they were looking at some big numbers when the looked at the packet of bills on the agenda for approval on Tuesday.
Of the $1,835,484.93 authorized for payment $1.5 million was for the new communications system being installed. Precinct 4 Commissioner Chuck McHam said this would have been the final of three payments on the system before the county decided to spend a little more to own its towers, rather than lease space on other towers. The three payments totaled $4.5 million.
Two weeks ago, Commissioners court agreed to a contract with L3 Harris Technologies, Tuesday, to spend an additional $1.8 million on top of the original $4.5 for the additional construction and improvements.
