The Hudson River Eel Project – which has netted, counted and released roughly 2 million juvenile eels since its inception in 2008 – owes its success to a cadre of nearly 1,000 high school, college and adult citizen scientists donating time and effort each spring along the Hudson River.
The Hudson Eel Project is run by the DEC, coordinated by their Hudson River Estuary Program and the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve, and staffed by powerede by volunteers. This citizen science project is succeeding at its dual objects of collecting data about glass eels while developing a sense of place and stewardship in volunteers
