16年前，笔者第一次从武汉去湖北恩施鹤峰县，早上7点出发，晚上8点才到。今年再去鹤峰，交通已大为改善，早上7点出发，下午1点就到了。过去，鹤峰的患者常以外出看病路途跋涉为苦；现在，路好走了，大家却说，用不着往外跑了：家门口就能治！ 如今，鹤峰县中心医院的医疗技术水平从16年前全省县医院倒数第五上升到前50名，80%的病人可以在县里治疗，不必上州府、省城。因病致贫、因病返贫问题也大大缓解。
县医院医疗水平为何能升级？鹤峰县中心医院将其归功于武汉协和医院连续16年的持续帮扶，而武汉协和医院则感谢鹤峰县中心医院的真诚接纳和全力支持。其实，对口帮扶更好发挥作用，在笔者看来，就在于这种“1+1>2”效应。
