Concerns have been raised for journalist and women’s rights activist Sophia Huang Xueqin, who is said to have been experiencing severe health issues during her pre-trial detention since September 2021. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemns Huang Xueqin’s arbitrary jailing and urges the Chinese authorities to provide her with immediate medical support and ensure her swift release.
A record total of 533 journalists are currently detained worldwide, according to the annual round-up of violence and abuses against journalists published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
RSF's round-up shows that the number of journalist detained in 2022 is 13.4% higher than the figure for last year. Of those currently in detention, 78 are women - a rise of nearly 30% compared to 2021.
