County Board committee offers alternative redistricting map

County Board committee offers alternative redistricting map Scott Cousins, scousins@thetelegraph.com FacebookTwitterEmail 3of3 EDWARDSVILLE Madison County’s Government Relations Committee has filed a second proposed redistricting map for Madison County Board seats that would retain the current number of members. This comes the day after Madison Board Chairman Kurt Prenzler unveiled a proposal that would reduce the number of board seats to 25 from the current 29. “The proposed map has support from both Republicans and Democrats serving on the county board,” said Government Relations Committee Chairman Chris Guy, R-Maryville. “Now the most important part is for the public to provide input on the proposed fair map.”

911 contract with AT&T OK d by committee Scott Cousins, scousins@thetelegraph.com FacebookTwitterEmail EDWARDSVILLE The extension of a contract with AT&T to provide service for Madison County’s 911 system was approved by the Madison County Board’s Public Safety Committee at its Monday meeting. The board also approved extending the service agreement to accommodate another dispatching station in the Glen Carbon Police Department. Madison County 911 Director Dana Burris said the contract covers the hosting agreement for the county’s 911 system. The agreement expired in December 2020, and the new one-year agreement would be retroactive to that date. Because of delays caused by legal challenges to the county’s 911 consolidation plan, the service contract had been subject to a number of extensions.

COVID-19, aging residents cited in 2020 deaths

COVID-19, aging residents cited in 2020 deaths Scott Cousins, scousins@thetelegraph.com FacebookTwitterEmail 3of3 EDWARDSVILLE Deaths in Madison County increased by almost 500 in 2020 over 2019 figures, an approximate 19 percent increase according to the recently-released annual coroner’s report. The report shows a total of 3,037 deaths in 2020, compared to 2,550 the previous year. “Assuredly, some of this increase is certainly vested with COVID-19 and the pandemic,” Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn said in the report. “However, Madison County also has an aging population with concomitant health issues associated with aging as well.” He noted overdose deaths deceased in 2020 but is “still striking in our caseload.”
