Artillery shells discovered in Freetown, safely detonated by police

The Herald News FREETOWN That big boom you heard on Saturday wasn t fireworks, and it wasn t another earthquake. Believe it or not, it was two old old artillery shells, which were discovered at the Town of Freetown Transfer Station on Howland Road, according to a press release from Freetown Police. Freetown Police and Fire units were dispatched, and State Police bomb disposal technicians arrived on scene and detonated the shells at approximately 5 p.m. While there was no danger to residents during the disposal process, a reverse 911 call was made so that residents were alerted to the the loud report and vibration caused by the detonation, according to Lt. Steven E. Abbott, Public Information Officer.
