Passing the driving test is a stressful rite of passage for anyone but Covid-19 is only adding to the anxiety. The pandemic has slammed the brakes on thousands of people who are unable to book an exam because of lockdown safety restrictions.
According to the latest annual figures, almost 1.6 million people a year have to remember their mirror, signal and manoeuvre under exam conditions in a car. But since the Government shut test centres, frustration has been building among learner drivers.
More than 50,000 have signed an online people’s petition, which calls on the Government to allow driving instructors to pass learners who they believe are ready for the road. At least 100,000 signatures are needed to trigger a debate in Parliament.
