Mayor proclaims August ‘Breastfeeding Awareness Month’
LIMA The city of Lima officially recognized the month of August as Breastfeeding Awareness Month, joining the national initiative with a proclamation on Wednesday morning. Lima Public Works Director Howard Elstro read the proclamation on behalf of Lima Mayor David Berger.
The proclamation provided information about its benefits, and asked all Lima residents to encourage and support breastfeeding.
Lori Nester, breastfeeding coordinator for Allen County WIC, thanked the mayor for bringing light to the issue.
“We have a time right now where we’re really sensitive to harassment and sexual harassment and those kinds of issues. And I think for some people, bringing up the conversation about breastfeeding can be difficult, especially if you are a man in a position of power,” Nester said. “So I’ve really appreciated (Berger’s) support over the years that we’ve been doing this.”

By Trevor Hubert - thubert@limanews.com
LIMA COVID-19 cases are on the rise again in Allen County, prompting the city of Lima to make changes regarding its mask guidelines. To stay in line with the CDC recommendation, the city is encouraging all employees and visitors to mask up when they are indoors at city buildings, vaccinated or not.
While the city is not requiring masks, they are still highly recommending it to everyone in their buildings.
“The Allen County Health Department has recognized that COVID activity has increased in our county,” said Lima Public Works Director Howard Elstro. “They have encouraged us and others to heed the CDC guidelines, which encourages the use of masks indoors by both vaccinated and unvaccinated persons.”

By Sam Shriver - sshriver@limanews.com
LIMA Lima council’s Safety Services and Neighborhood Concerns committee met virtually Monday to continue its look at the city’s deteriorating curbs and sidewalks.
The meting was a follow-up to one held in February where members were concerned about cars parked on the tree lawn, in the Essex and Catalpa Street areas because of the lack of curbs.
During Monday’s meeting, Public Works Director Howard Elstro indicated that about 60% of the city could use new curbs. Elstro pointed out there are 165 miles of streets and 1,874 city blocks in Lima.
