The exhibit takes its subtitle from the speech that president Lyndon Johnson read before the nation upon the signing of the act on july 2, 1964. There is a copy of the speech borrowed from the johnson president ial library included in the exhibit. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is considered the most significant use of civil rights legislation since reconstruction. It prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, in the areas of voting, employment, public accommodations, public facilities, education.
