In 2004, Michael Davis was a senior editor at TV Guide. His beat was one that often flew under the radar: children’s television. But it was a perfect focus for Davis, who studied psychology and teaching before his journalism career.
He was covering children s television because, frankly, no one else wanted to. I was in no position to say, No thank you. But the truth is, I was very happy to take on children s television as a beat, Davis said recently, smiling.

Spanish director Almodóvar’s English-language debut is a short film that strips the hallmarks of his oeuvre down to a few core elements: a high-strung woman engages in high drama while clad in high fashion. Based on Jean Cocteau’s monodrama of the same name, The Human Voice is essentially a 30-minute showpiece for Tilda Swinton, who stars as a jilted woman confronting her ex in a lengthy phone call as her oblivious dog unhelpfully reflects back her anxiety. When it launched in 1969, Sesame Street was a children’s TV show where people and puppets sang songs and counted stuff and goofed around. It was also an unbelievably ambitious project – largely funded by the U.S. government – to make educational television that was diverse, inclusive and engaging. Arriving at the end of the civil-rights era, it was genuinely revolutionary.
Based on Michael Davis’s book, Street Gang charts the history and evolution of the show, talking to the surviving cast and creators (with the notable exception of Frank Oz) and their children, of course. The behind-the-scenes footage, much of it shot in the early 80s, is priceless; the contemporaneous interviews with Jim Henson, director Jon Stone and producer Joan Ganz Cooney are invaluable.
