Just before 5 a.m. Monday, three officers from Myanmar’s national police force showed up at Po Po’s home in Yangon. The officers, two of whom carried rifles, asked for her husband Min Thway Thit, a former leader of a prominent dissident student union. “They said they wanted to ask some questions,” says Po Po. “I asked whether they had a search warrant to enter his room, and they told me it wasn’t necessary.”

On Monday morning, the 54 million people of Myanmar, a country in Southeast Asia, awoke to an attempt to dismantle their relatively new democratic government. At dawn, Myanmar s military seized control of the country after detaining their democratically-elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other government officials. Amid the political unrest, the country s internet was temporarily cut off, banks were closed and flights have been cancelled.
