Texas Officer Put Knee on Suspect s Neck After He Claimed It Was Broken On 4/29/21 at 12:45 PM EDT Gary Berger, 40, was apprehended by officers on January 19 during a traffic stop in Montgomery County. He apparently crashed his motorcycle as a police vehicle, which he claims he has not seen, followed him. It is unclear if the police officer wanted him to stop. Police bodycam footage seen by Newsweek shows Berger standing with his arms by his side next to a fallen motorcycle as an officer tells him to get on the ground and threatens to taser him if he does not comply.

The Burden on Black Boys Adam Harris © Rita Barros/Getty Social workers and educators who see young people especially Black boys who live in poor, segregated neighborhoods react aggressively, become irritable, or have trouble concentrating, often identify such behavior as maladaptive. But new research, led by Noni Gaylord-Harden, a clinical psychologist at Texas A&M University, proposes that the young people’s behavior is a rational response to their environment and helps keep them safe. Her findings suggest that instead of focusing on these behaviors identifying them as pathologies to be punished or symptoms to be treated policy makers need to recognize them as adaptive and work to change the inequitable environment that produces them.
