South Texas folklorist Hernán Moreno Hinojosa has told many a creepy tale about purported ghosts and phantoms that roam the Brush Country between Corpus Christi and Laredo and just north of the Rio Grande.
He writes about them in his books with a daredevil spirit of discovery and certainty that these manifestations are more than just a person’s impression or imagination, but true-to-life occurrences that make us shiver when we hear or see things we cannot explain.
These flashes of presences that do not exist (or do they?) are talked about by Moreno Hinojosa with a foreboding reverence in campfires and homes throughout the state and, indeed, the nation. Big Foot, El Cucuy or the bogey man, La Llorona (the Crying Woman). Werewolves, Moth Man, “Lechuzas,” “La Chupacabra” and other bizarre creatures seem as real as the stars in the sky for many people.
