After 2 consecutive days, the Texas House of Representatives has approved a piece of marijuana reform legislation. The Texas House of Representatives passed a bill earlier this week. The goal of this new bill is to significantly increase the stateâs medical cannabis program. In addition to this bill a separate proposal to reduce punishment for possessing marijuana concentrates.
A broader cannabis decriminalization bill was also getting ready to be taken up by the chamber. Two new bills heard this week by the Texas House Public Health Committee would expand health professionals’ capacity to opt out of medical procedures that conflict with their beliefs. Both bills are still pending in committee.
House Bill 1291 is sponsored by Rep. Keith Bell and would give health professionals written notice of their right to object to performing an abortion. According to Bell, this bill addresses the potential discrimination faced by providers who refuse to perform abortions. While current Texas law protects providers against such discrimination, Bell believes they need explicit written notice of their right to do so.

A former state representative who has was recently elected chairman of the Oklahoma Republican Party has a history of anti-Islamic rhetoric and even joked about the execution of Hillary Clinton in a past Facebook post.
John Bennett, a former Republican member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, was elected the chairman of the Oklahoma GOP on April 10. He beat Rogers County party activist Christine Leeviraphan, former state Rep. Charles Ortega of Altus, and Jenni White, a former teacher and outspoken critic of the Common Core curriculum for public schools, to clinch the chair.
