When Jean-Paul Sartre wrote, “Hell is other people,” he may have been writing about the terror of constantly being watched, examined and judged by others. He might also have been reflecting on the torture of living with someone who never wipes up the crumbs after making toast, or the agony of living with someone who insists that you do. Endlessly.

Sugar Collection
“Almost everybody has a nostalgic memory of Indian candy and desserts,” says Arjun Rathi, founder of the eponymous Mumbai-based multi-disciplinary studio. “Our new collection explores the textures and colours of this food scape, in lights.” Think Motichoor Flushmounts, Paan pendants, and Chocolate Wall Scones. One of the standouts: the striped Bullseye. Mimicking the popular mint candy, these were created by Czech glass blowers and come as table lamps and hanging lights. The people who know me best understand that if they can’t get hold of me, I am probably in the bath. While some go for a run to work out the knotty problems of their lives, I retreat to the tub. I take with me the essentials: a cup of tea, sometimes snacks, often a stack of magazines, or (look away now, librarians) a book. I light candles. I turn on the hot tap with my toes when the water starts to cool. When I hop out, I am much restored.
