The Minnesota House voted on Thursday to legalize marijuana for adults, the furthest the proposal has ever traveled in the Legislature and a watershed moment on an issue that has long languished in St. Paul.
After more than five hours of debate, the House voted 72-61 in favor of legalization, with support from nearly all Democrats and six Republicans. DFL Gov. Tim Walz supports the measure, but it still faces long odds to become law this year, with just days left in the regular 2021 session and opposition from Republicans in control of the state Senate.

The recent voter-identification bill passed by Minnesota Senate Republicans (thankfully dead on arrival in the House) was just a foretaste of what could happen if Republicans win control of the Legislature and the governorship next year (“Voter ID requirement passes Minnesota Senate, faces hurdle in the House,” May 3).
Republicans know our elections are fair, but it seems, as a deflection, that they’d like everyone to forget about the biggest example of attempted voter fraud in the 2020 election. That was President Donald Trump’s phone calls to election officials in Georgia threatening criminal charges if they didn’t “find” thousands of ballots in his favor.
