Day 1 of the Women’s Candidates saw two decisive games (out of two), as Lei Tingjie and Humpy Koneru defeated Mariya and Anna Muzychuk respectively, both with the white pieces. Matches are played to the best of four, so the Muzychuk sisters have plenty of time to bounce back. Humpy’s victory was a nice 24-mover. | Photo: Michal Walusza
Half the field of the Women’s Candidates will battle it out in a knockout event to decide who qualifies to a final match set to take place sometime in 2023. FIDE announced the adoption of a new format back in June, and has yet to disclose where and when the second group of players (i.e. Pool B) will fight for the remaining spot in the final. Pool A will take place from October 24 to November 6 at the Hotel Hermitage in Monte Carlo.
