I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA s Phoenix Mercury and the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I m a voice over artist. I previously covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for
La Sirena Mexican Mermaid Slated for September
La Sirena’s newest cigar will be coming from one of the Dominican Republic’s newest factories, Tabacalera La Isla, opened by Hostos Fernández Quesada at the end of 2020.
It will be called the La Sirena Mexican Mermaid, and is based on the La Sirena Aniversario Especial that was released in 2019 in celebration of the company’s 10th anniversary. The blend is still being finalized, but Danny Ditkowich told
halfwheel that it will use a Mexican-grown wrapper and binder. The filler is still being worked on but is close to being finalized.
Hostos Fernández Quesada has opened up his own factory in the Dominican Republic.
Called Tabacalera La Isla, it’s located inside the Gurabo Zona Franca a free zone in Santiago, Dominican Republic. Fernández opened last week, though that seems more of a soft opening given the time of year. He told
halfwheel that there will be 10 pairs rolling cigars in January.
As for what cigars the factory is making, that remains a bit of a mystery. A press release says that the factory is focusing on making private label cigars, i.e. cigars for other companies to sell, but he declined to list his current clients.
