possible. so many have been released. can you talk about how you did that? that is jim s legacy. it does give me joy in many ways. when jim was taken in 2012 through 2014, there was no u.s. hostage enterprise. there was no one to help me. that was part of the reason i was sent in circles and people didn t know. the government did not know what to do with me actually. and i was ignorant of our policy of nonengagement with captors. because obviously, if you don t engage at all, the captors will get rid of hostages and kill them and that is what happened with jim, kayla mueller in 2014. i was angry. i felt as a country we could do much better. thanks to many good people, we have.
we have a u.s. hostage enterprise with dedicated government officials that brought home more than 100 u.s. nationals. people that were targeted like jim, free of committing any crime at all but were targeted because they were americans. and more than 100 have been brought home. it is still a huge national security threat in all honesty. it is a challenge to us. americans are targeted when we travel internationally. we truly are. the book is titled american mother and it is available now. diane foley, thank you very much for writing this book and for coming on the show. you can find more information by clicking on james foley foundation. again, thank you so much. coming up, a new poll of
international hostage-taking is really a very nonpartisan issue. this is about americans who need help from our government to get home. to be freed from an unlawful detention or a true kidnapping. so very encouraging to have congress speak out. yeah. absolutely. in your opinion, what is the u.s. government, biden administration, are they missing anything here that they could be doing? well, to be honest, the foley foundation has been concerned about this. because our research is showing that the current hostage enterprise which was set up after jim and the other five plus americans were killed in 2014/15 was narrowly focused on hostage-taking by terrorists and
pirates. now 90% of captors of u.s. nationals are state actors. so the foley foundation is calling for a comprehensive review of the current hostage enterprise. it is obvious that the decisions have to be made at the executive branch. so the current enterprise really does not allow for that. so the one thing we can do is really continue to take this seriously and re-evaluate how we bring our people home and what a national security issue it is becoming. and journalists take such huge risks going into hot spots around the world like war zones and other places. i know jim s work meant so much to you. why is this work so important, in your view? and evan s work? well, without evan and jim, so many others who have gone
