First-time snorklers were able to see up to 7m underwater in this year s “exceptional” conditions. Event organiser Freya McCall said the event was celebrating more than just Seaweek this time around - it also marked the 20th anniversary of the EMR programme. “We certainly dealt to this year’s [Seaweek] theme of ‘Connecting with our Seas - Toi Moana, Toi Tangata’ by enabling so many people to enjoy the marine environment and to strengthen their connection with it on such a serene day,” she said.

When I first learnt to dive, I was astounded at New Zealand s underwater world. I d been snorkelling overseas in tropical areas, but I had no idea what was beneath the surface in our own oceans. Each part of the country has a unique marine ecosystem with more snorkel and dive spots than most of us land-dwellers realise.
