Waverley Council Head Lifeguard Bruce ‘Hoppo’ Hopkins is making a strong push behind the “float to survive” campaign, as drowning deaths rise across Australia.
Mr Hopkins said the longer people can float, the better chance they have of drifting to a safe area or getting rescued.
“It gives people the chance to get rescued, it gives them the chance to stay calm because if they don’t and they start trying to swim and panic, they then take water in,” he told Sky News Australia.
“That first mouthful of water is the start of the process of drowning and once you swallow one bit of water, it’s pretty much downhill from there.”
