In what is being called yet another accidental shooting of a child, a 6-year-old boy died Tuesday evening at his home in Jacksonville s Dinsmore community.
A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in the case and charged with culpable negligence for the improperly stored firearm that the child retrieved, the Sheriff s Office announced Wednesday afternoon. The Times-Union is not naming the teen due to his age.
The victim was shot in the head about 7:30 p.m. in the home in 10000 block of Lowe Lane where several other people were inside, the Sheriff s Office said.
The investigation showed the 6-year-old boy, identified as Danny Waye III by family, had been in a bedroom watching television when he found the loaded handgun. The Sheriff s Office did not say where the gun was but that it had been left where the child could get it. Then he shot himself while handling the weapon.
Girl apparently shot accidentally in the head in Jacksonville home
A 14-year-old girl has been hospitalized after being shot in the head in an Arlington home, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff s Office.
It s too early to say if it was an accidental shooting, but we can only hope, Sgt. Steve Rudlaff said.
Officers were called just after 5 p.m. to a home in the 2400 block of Wedgefield Boulevard by a family member, Rudlaff said.
He said the girl suffered a gunshot wound to the head, a through and through, so it is very critical. At this point, we don t know if it s survivable or not.
