Than u. S. Government. In u. S. Government i can talk to them about important sieve, and how to do it. But i think a big challenge to forming citizens who can tackle the problems of today is our u. S. History. It is teaching a very traditional mainstream history that reinforces the current traditions. As they say, they cannot dismantle the masters house. So when you are teaching a traditional white man mythical if you try hard enough youll get ahead type of history. Then you turn around and say, okay, now were going to talk about racial and income inequality. It conflicts. And so i think you really have to teach the roots of todays problems in u. S. History for the students to understand. You need to get down to the root causes. Ill give you an example. This summer i was very shaken by the two deaths of black men by police and the rise of trumpism. And i said i cant go on as if nothing has happen. And i emailed my supervisor and i said, i am just completely compressing the curriculum a
An enormous step forward. Now, the agency has been in existence for only four and a half years, but has already done some important things. Its taken some enforce actions, its done policy work to protect those people who are not entitled or not eligible for anything other than subprime loans to protect them in the market. It has proposed some, some curtailment of the right to mandatory arbitration. But thats just the first step. That agency is under assault constantly in congress. I talked to my friend rich, he stopped counted the number of times hes been hauled up to the hill to testify. It was, i think, 50 at last count. Hes not only been there for a few years. We need more legislation, and in order oo eer to do that, we ne organize. We need to personalize these stories, and we need to look at the level of powers that are available to us and try to exercise power. So let me talk about a few things. One is if you look at mandatory arbitration, congress understands how powerful a force
Wonderful example so assuming some social and economic provisions ought to be in the tax laws, lets think about tax credits. Every dollar of tax credit saves you one dollar. It doesnt matter what your marginal tax bracket is. So if you owe a thousand dollars and you get a thousand dollar tax credit, you dont owe anything. If you owe a million dollars, you owe a million minus 1,000. Now, the tax credits also should be refundable in many cases where they are social programs because a refundable tax credit like the earned income tax credit which says people who are working but dont earn a living wage are going to get extra money to help them have a living wage. And so if you make it refundable if you dont owe the income tax, youll get a direct grant. Both commissions said that about the Home Mortgage interest deduction, replace it by a credit. Congress ignored that. Finally, you might have the largest credit for people who need the help most and the least credits for people who need the h
