Today, despite the unprecedented circumstances, we come together as the United States congress bestows its highest honor, the congressional gold medal on the crewmen of the uss indianapolis. Thank you to the entire indiana delegation, indiana governor, and secretary of the navy for your efforts to make this momentous event possible. And it was just a few miles away that my parents first met as graduate students at uc berkeley. Where they were active in the civil rights movement. And they were born half a world away from each other. My father came from jamaica. Studied economics. My mother came from india to study the science of fighting disease.
And i know that theres a lot of excitement as there ought be for this evenings conversations so thank you for taking time to be here. Were so delighted to have professor margaret macmillen with us today.
