HONOLULU (AP) Honolulu’s mayor on Tuesday said he would appoint former U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa to the board of the city’s rail line as the long-delayed and massively over-budget project faces a funding shortfall that could prevent construction from continuing to its original intended destination of Ala Moana Center.
Hanabusa will serve on a volunteer basis on the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation board, Mayor Rick Blangiardi told reporters at a news conference. She won t accept a $924,000, six-year contract she was recently awarded by HART to serve as a consultant, the mayor said.

HONOLULU (AP) A former Maui police chief will lead the Hawaii board that reviews police shootings, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Wednesday.
Gary Yabuta, director of the federal High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area in Hawaii, was unanimously selected Tuesday by the Law Enforcement Officer Independent Review Board to serve as chairman at the board s first meeting in 15 months.
“We have a job to do, plain and simple. We were chosen for this job,” said Yabuta, a 31-year veteran of the Maui Police Department. It’s quite a task, but looking at the talent here and the dedication and the greatness about all of you, we are definitely on the right track.”

HONOLULU (AP) The Honolulu Police Department will not release body camera footage worn by the officers who shot and killed a 16-year-old boy because juveniles were involved, a spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday.
The department also won t release 911 recordings from the incident earlier this month, spokeswoman Sarah Yoro said.
She didn t immediately respond to questions seeking additional information.
Iremamber Sykap, 16, was driving a stolen car that was linked to a crime spree, police said.
Chief Susan Ballard said previously the department was still reviewing footage from more than 50 officers. Since juveniles were involved, there would be limitations on what could be released, she said. Ballard said the other occupants of the car ranged in age from 14 to 22.
