This morning, Kevin Kodama, senior service hydrologist at the National Weather Service’s Honolulu Forecast Office, hosted a press conference discussing the outlook for this year’s wet season. He said El Niño conditions have been present since the spring and intensified during the summer.
The most significant rain event for last month was Aug. 21, as the remnant moisture from what was Tropical Cyclone Fernanda moved across windward slopes of the Big Island and Maui. Automated rain gauges on the eastern side of the Big Island recorded 2 to 4 inches of rain.
Drought conditions in Hawaii are expected to get worse as the state enters its summer dry season, the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) warned.
