Final EA issued for West Maui Recycled Water System Project

WEST MAUI Progress on the development of the West Maui Recycled Water System Project inched forward with the publication of the Final Environmental Assessment (FEA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) in the state Office of Environmental Quality Control’s The Environmental Notice on June 23. The County of Maui, Department of Environmental Management, Wastewater Reclamation Division manages the operations of the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility (WWRF), producing R-1 recycled water, the highest grade of recycled water for non-potable use, distributing this valuable water resource through the West Maui Recycled Water System.
County plans to upgrade West Maui Recycled Water System

HONOKOWAI The Maui County Department of Environmental Management is proposing a $26 million project to upgrade the West Maui Recycled Water System. The Draft Environmental Assessment (Anticipated Finding of No Significant Impact) for the West Maui Recycled Water System project is included in the Feb. 23, 2021 issue of The Environmental Notice published by the state Office of Environmental Quality Control. A link to the environmental study and details on how to submit comments before the March 25 deadline are available via www.health.hawaii.gov. Saying it will minimize the use of controversial injection wells at the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility, the County of Maui is proposing $26 million in upgrades to the recycled water system.
The West Maui Recycled Water Expansion Project calls for renovating the existing Honokowai Reservoir; replacing an aging 20-inch recycled waterline with a 24-inch pipe; and constructing a new reuse pump station and recycled water storage basin at the Lahaina facility.
